So I watched this music video, and this is in fact completely untrue. There are many scenes in which black/brown girls are casted.

One could conceivably argue that  any white star who features twerking in a music video is automatically being exploitative.

However, that was not my perception of this video in particular. It actually appeared to me the director took pains to portray a variety of dance styles (ballet, interpretive dance, rhythmic gymnastics, break dancing, twerking, cheerleading, etc.) all as equally valid art forms. Every performing group in the video includes a variety of ethnicities. I think I did actually see a black/brown dancer in the ballet troupe, though it’s difficult to tell. Look in the rear left of this gif:

We don’t know if they cast individual dancers or hired a dance troupe, so if black women are underrepresented that might say more about the dance troupe’s selection practices than the video director’s casting practices.

All the styles of dance, ballet or otherwise are presented in the same fashion — talented professionals being brilliant + Taylor Swift being endearingly incompetent. The black women in the video aren’t portrayed as Taylor’s dancing accessories, but rather as experts in their style:

Moreover, at the end of the video there’s a sequence showing all the different professionals being silly and dancing in a non-choreographed manner, thereby humanizing them, showing they exist outside of their role as dancers in Taylor’s video:

I think if we interpret the twerking scenes in this video as demeaning, that says more about our cultural perception of black women than it does about this particular video’s specific portrayal of black women.

all-too-well:

thanks mtv :’-)

I thought I’d make a post summarizing Taylor Swifts video “Shake It Off” for the people who don’t want to give her more hate views on VEVO. Maybe instead of giving her 4,000 angry views on youtube we can just give her my one view and reblog this hella so no one else watches it out of irritable curiosity?

Anyways the video is basically just her dancing singing an anthem that every White person appropriating another culture says, “The haters gonna hate.” There’s no real content or plot to the video, just a lot of dance shots where she’s being really awkward. It’s actually amazing how someone could really pretend to be so innocent and naive yet still convey a very harmful message.

Above I posted some screen caps of the video and after only watching it once I got all I needed to know.  Already from the beginning of the video you see a hard clash between the dancers. There are the prima ballerina types who are all white women, elegantly leaping and stretching and dancing. Then there are the faceless black women who are shaking their asses. Yes, faceless, literally every shot of the “twerkers” are only their asses. There’s also other groups of dancers which include some break dancers (which are all brown men,) and contemporary dancers (which is a group of white people and one girl with an afro.) Oh, yes, I forgot the cheerleading group which was all white cheerleaders and one black girl in the back. I just find it hard to believe that they couldn’t have a solid mixed group of people in each category. She pulled a Miley and Iggy and probably said something like “Well I want a more urban feel! But keep the safe ballerinas white!!” Literally the only group that had a saturation of black women was the twerking group. She even had them squat and shake their asses while she crawled through their legs! So edgy! So urban!

This is the problem I have with Taylor Swift. She’s always trying to convey herself as the innocent one who is “man worthy” (as if being man worthy is even important) while slut shaming other women for being sexual, or even just dressing in “short skirts” and “high heels.” All of the sudden now she wants to say, “To hell with the haters I can have as many problematic exes as I want! Now I’m going to be single and edgy! I’m going to shake it off! And to be single and edgy and sexual I have to dance with a bunch of ass shaking black women!  USE A BUNCH OF BLACK WOMEN AS PROPS

Long story story, Taylor Swift is not only a slut shaming misogynist, she’s ignorant and has obviously racist/stereotypical views of brown and black people.

First of all, thank you for watching Taylor’s video. The views mean a lot. You also clearly watched this more than once to overanalyze everything so you can be the social justice hero of August 2014. She appreciates all the views she gets.

If you watched the Livestream on Yahoo! on the 18th, you would know the story behind the video. Yes, you’re right about one thing. The song is directed to her haters. Congratulations, you got one thing right. Taylor hired professional dancers of all races to be part of her video. One of the people in this video is Alex Goldschmidt, who, in my opinion, is the new Perez Hilton. He is annoying as shit and most Swifties would agree with that. She gathered professional dancers so they would help highlight the fact that she cannot dance. She is the epitome of what Brad Paisley talks about in “Alcohol” when he says “helping white people dance.” The point of the song is to be a big “fuck you” to the people who hate her for dating their “Hazza bear” (let’s be real, the people who send her the most hate are women in menopause and One Direction fans). So, instead of having a plot in the video, she made a video making fun of herself.

If you actually watch the video, which because of your long, senseless rant, people won’t, you will see that there are multiple scenes are various types of dancing in there. There’s a ballet scene, a hip-hop scene, a contemporary scene, a twerking scene, and a few others. Of course, everyone has a problem with the twerking scene. The thing is, twerking, as dumb as it sounds when you type it out, is all about the butt. That is the focus of the dance. You can’t twerk and show your face at the same time. She could have hired owls for the video so they could show off their tail feathers while turning their heads around so you can see their face. Would that please you? And what you said was actually false, anyway, because you do catch a glimpse of the twerkers faces anyway.

A lot of people are also saying that “twerking is a black thing” and are offended that there are white people doing it, which is prejudiced in itself. Don’t use racism to counter “racism.”

And yes. There were primarily white cheerleaders. In this day and age, it’s like people are expected to make sure everything is equal. There must be the same amount of black and white people, or else it’s racist. That’s almost as ridiculous as saying that if you have three more brown m&ms than yellow m&ms in your bag from Tesco, it’s racist against Asians. Saying that would be prejudiced, and so is pointing out the fact that there aren’t the same number of black people as white people. If you want equality, shouldn’t we all be the same? Equal means equal; you shouldn’t look at someone differently because if their skin color. There were cheerleaders in the video. There’s no need to count the number of races because that is childish and you’re only contradicting yourself.

Also, the fact that you brought her “slut-shaming” into this rant is immature. You sound like you belong in the One Direction fanbase because she dated Harry. Yes, “Better Than Revenge” calls out Camille Belle. Are you unaware that Tayor was cheated on? No, that doesn’t make slut-shaming right. I’m sure that if someone cheated on you, you would call the girl they hooked-up with some not-so-nice things, too. You’re no social justice hero because you made a post about how evil someone is because they had twerking in their video. I can assure you that Taylor doesn’t look at her black friends and say “Wow, you’re black. You must be able to twerk.”

By the way, she’s had six exes in eight years. Those six exes and her have moved on and have all said positive things about her and her music, and some have even been seen with her after the fact. Adam Levine has had how many exes? And is he still looked at as a sex icon for some people? The answer is yes. And I respect him, anyway, just like I respect Taylor Swift. The difference between other people and me is that they have the audacity to say Taylor swift is a slut, but that Adam Levine is this hot, scrumptious player because he’s dated so many people. There’s such a double standard. Focus on that instead of trying to make her look racist.

You’re no social justice hero, you’re just a petty blogger who wants to stir things up.

You’re kidding me. Yet you fail to mention there were three other white women twerking as well? The whole video shows a mix of all races in each scene and because a professional ballet company that they hired doesn’t have a black girl - Taylor Swift is a racist. For people to even put the time into trying so hard to takedown someone who has clearly done nothing wrong is one of the utmost pathetic things I have ever witnessed. Oh, and please explain to me how she is a misogynist. I feel like these people hear these words without understanding their true meanings and then label those who they feel hatred towards, just to stir up a reaction from others just as ignorant as themselves. You’re not an intellectual, you are a tumblr narcissist who likes to tear people down who you feel threatened by. YES TAYLOR SWIFT SCARES YOU BECAUSE YOU CANT FIND A LEGITIMATE REASON TO CRITICIZE HER. Do me a favor and go read a book that will help you open your mind and realize that maybe supporting a successful, positive woman is more effective than bashing one.

❝Oh shit! I forgot to tell them that! Do you think they’ll know?❞

Taylor after realizing she forgot to tell people they could begin downloading “Shake it Off” (via leadmeouttothefloor)

I was the one that asked her when we could buy the single and I SERIOUSLY DONT THINK SHE SAID “OH SHIT.” I believe she said, “I should—*looks around* I should have told them that..”.

Here's How I Ended Up Eating Pizza With Taylor Swift In Her Apartment Last Night

analyzingtaylor:

Well this has got to be a most unique perspective.  I’m tetering between “what a douche!” and “ok, this was kinda entertaining”.

Of those 10 guys, I would bet my life savings on the fact that I was the only straight one… and after this day, I’m not sure I can really call myself straight anymore.
